So apparently being cool and popular lands you a bigger and better brain.

The annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience saw a report showing that several studies reveal links between social structures and specific brain structures and activity.

The findings are many and complex but let me break them down for you. (After all, apparently you should be harnessing your brainpower by stealing lunch money, not crunching numbers.)

Firstly, your place in a social hierarchy can influence your decision-making, physical and mental health and a heap of other things. Secondly, those with lots of friends have certain brain regions that are bigger and better connected than people with no pals. And finally, being at the top of a stable social environment means you produce more new brain cells, while living in an unstable setting slows cell production. These studies were done with rats and monkeys, as well as people.

So yeah. Cool = cranium. Maybe that’s what Quinn Morgendorffer was hiding under that fringe of hers all along…

If you feel like enlarging your brain go ahead and read the report from the Society for Neuroscience if you want to. Or you could like, go and crawl your way up the social ladder at least a rung or two – it’s good for you after all.
