Batman ruled over my formative years, coming a close second only to Ninja Turtles. The first vehicle I ever lusted over was Tim Burton’s Batmobile, I remember how badass it looked even for a three year old, that gnarly turbine sticking out between the two exaggerated front fenders, the massive side scoops, the stance, angry looking cockpit and that tail end….incredible. Looking back at all the cars I’ve owned many of them carried Batmobile-esque traits, Michael Keaton’s ride seeped into my subconscious early and was the basis for my preferred aesthetics and stylistic choices.

From the get-go all the live-action Batmobiles were seriously stylish as the producers were well aware that a large part of The Bat’s aura came from the car he was driving; meancing, black and sleek. In the 40’s it was a Cadillac and then a ’49 Mercury, two of the most beautiful cars of that decade, in the 60’s the producers of the TV show enlisted custom car legend George Barris at the height of his career to build a Batmobile from a one-off Ford Futura concept

Now with all the buzz surrounding The Batman with the upcoming Dark Knight Rises film  set to drop this week, the guys behind a documentary focusing on the Batmobile over the last half century saw this as the perfect timing to release the trailer. It showed on US TV yesterday but it’s not released on DVD until later in the year but there’s plenty of guys like me who can’t wait for Bruce Wayne’s most important gadget to finally get its time in the spotlight.
