A team of cleaners in Italy seem to have done their job too well, by cleaning up what turned out to be a centrepiece installation… because they thought it was actual garbage. The art installation at the Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolanzo, Italy titled ‘Where are we going to dance tonight?’ comprised of 300 empty champagne bottles, confetti, and cigarette butts scattered on the floor.

The artists behind the installation Goldschmied & Chiari took inspiration from the Italy of the 1980s, a period of “consumerism, hedonism, by socialist politicians and their neverending parties” in creating the work. Museum director Letizia Ragaglia said that the cleaning staff had been told to only clean the front foyer after an opening night party, when evidently they mistook the installation for the foyer. Fortunately for the museum the cleaners sorted all the ‘rubbish’ into groups and were yet to dispose of it. The restoration of the ‘artwork’ is expected to be done today.
