Perth artist Sean Morris is no stranger to great group shows – his personal resume’ goes for days. Now lending his hand to curating, Sean has brought together some of his favourite artists for Let’s Go, Magic Weirdos – opening October 25 in Perth – a collection of artwork which is bound to make you feel, well, weird and, possibly, violated. Amidst final prep for the exhibition, as well as working on an upcoming solo show, Sean gives us the 411 on Magic Weirdos.

My name is… Sean Morris.

This exhibition is called… Let’s Go, Magic Weirdos.

And it is about/inspired by… My friends who make incredible art; also skateboarding food, corrupt lizard cops, Ninja Turtle porn and Steve Buscemi.

You can see it at… Paper Mountain in Northbridge, Perth. Opening at 6pm on October 25 and running until October 28.

The artists involved are… Stevie Gee, Jon Boam and James Unsworth from London; John Malta, Michael Hsiung, Eric McHenry, Luke Pelletier and Ambird from the USA; Sheryo from Singapore, Ican Harem and Ryan Ady Putra from Indonesia, Manuel Donada from Madrid, Mariana Moyses from Rio De Janeiro, Mel Stringer from Queensland, Ghostpatrol and Evie Cahir from Melbourne… and then the Perth contingent is myself, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Yohyo, Cheeks, Calliope Bridge, and The Yok – who is based in New York these days.

…and I chose these works because… These are some of my favourite artists in the world right now, and all of their work makes me feel strange and awesome and sometimes violated.

The hardest part about curating is… all the emails, because artists are generally terrible at answering emails. I am worst than most, so that wasn’t exactly a surprising discovery.

…and the best thing is…  Awesome art parcels turning up in the post every few days, and getting to see work in real life by people I’ve been following online for ages.

My dream line-up of artists, living or dead, for the ultimate group show would be… Let’s Go Magic Weirdos ultimate edition: Jim Houser, Charles Burns, Makato Aida, John Kricfalusi, Margaret Kilgallen, Jim Phillips, Mike Judge, Neckface, Mr.Bingo.

The coolest thing about the art scene in Perth is… Paper Mountain is killing it at the moment, so I’m pretty glad to be having the show there.

When I’m not curating, I… am making paintings for a solo show, coming up on December 7 at House Of Bricks in Melbourne.

Tomorrow I will be… doing flyer drops, sticking up Magic Weirdos posters, just generally “takin’ it to the streets”.

What I’m working on at the moment is… making tentative plans for a Magic Weirdos show next year in London!
