Although you may not know the name, you will most definitely know his work. Swiss artist and designer Hans Rudolf Giger created some of the most powerfully disturbing visuals in Hollywood’s history, including animals and props that propelled viewers of the 1979 sci-fi film Alien to watch through their fingers.

Passing away in May this year, Giger’s career, spanning for decades, reflected humanity’s increasingly close relationship with machines, melding the organic with the mechanical. Wired magazine has said he merged “sex, tech, legend.” A new series of unpublished photographs by Giger have been printed in a book. The photos, some of which have been edited by Giger through scratching, painting or drawing, document both his professional work and personal life. Take a look at some of the images above.
