The Drop: Come Out To Play zine

Swan has never looked prettier

What does the 1979 film The Warriors and watercolour painting have in common? Not a whole lot really, but that didn’t stop artist Robert Hogan from bringing the unlikely pair together in a zine that makes a happy marriage of the two. Contrasting such harsh imagery of the gory film with the soft medium that is watercolour, the end result—Come Out To Play—is art that is stunning in its delicate construction, but still manages to pack the same punchy impact as the film.

Robert Hogan is a graphic design student from Sydney, who definitely has a good grip of what he is working with.

Watercolour is very unforgiving, unlike other mediums where you can correct errors with a single layer of opaque paint.”

It’s getting harder and harder to make a zine that stands out—yet this one is anything but typical, as Hogan ensured that he avoided the obvious choices when representing the film’s themes.

As such a violent film, I felt compelled to mirror that intensity in a unique way without resorting to mere depictions of fight scenes. I illustrated some of the weaponry found within the film and contrasted it to my favourite, ominous looking gang leaders who are isolated from their environment.”

The zine was debuted at the Festival of the Photocopier Zine Fair at Melbourne Town Hall recently. Check out a preview of Come Out to Play above and see more of Hogan’s work here.
