Adam Savage transforms into Totoro for NYCC

Halloween outfit inspiration at its finest

Posted by

You probably know Adam Savage as “that guy on Mythbusters”, but when he’s not exploding cement trucks and building giant lego balls, you can find him on the Comic Con circuit.

At this year’s New York Comic Con, Savage went undercover in a Totoro outfit that he crafted himself. The full body costume of the friendly monster from the Studio Ghibli film My Neighbour Totoro allowed Savage to stay incognito, like the time he dressed up as the bear from The Revenant at the San Diego Comic Con.

The Totoro costume had a positive reception from other Comic Con attendees, where people reportedly came up to hug him and bury their faces in his fur. Because who could resist a real life Totoro? As Savage relates, “Totoro is based on nothing but love”.

With Halloween coming up, Savage’s Comic Con stunt provides some serious outfit inspiration. According to Savage, the costume took 14 hours to build and was “surprisingly simple”. It includes a camera and a monitor so that the wearer can see, as well as a fan to keep them cool. A video explaining its construction will be posted on Tested in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled if you want to transform into a walking Totoro yourself. In the meantime, check out how Savage’s adorable stunt played out in the clip above.
