Self-balancing scooters seem to be doing a pretty roaring trade lately, with everyone from primary school kids to mature-aged men in business suits wanting a slice of the scooter pie. But the handle-less Segways—also referred to as hoverboards, despite not actually hovering—have raised alarms within peak consumer group Choice, who are warning that overcharging the batteries could lead to both explosions and fire.

“While hoverboards might look more like something out of a science fiction film, the fire risk from overcharging the units is very real,” spokesman Tom Godfrey said.

“Although some hoverboards carry warnings about overcharging in their manuals, it’s important to ensure you charge the device as directed. Don’t put it on to charge and forget about it.

“It is important to unplug the device from the wall socket when fully charged.”

With hoverboards shaping up to be this year’s selfie-stick (read: sitting under every second Christmas tree), it’s important to steer clear of cheap, poor-quality models, and to follow all safety instructions and precautions before placing your feet on it and going for a joyride, according to Choice.
