Celebrating Jerry Seinfeld’s upcoming tour with a blast from the past

Let us reminisce the very best of his eponymous sitcom

Comedian extraordinaire Jerry Seinfeld is returning down under for his first stand up shows in almost 20 years. You’re likely asking yourself two things: How do I get my hands on some tickets and Why the hell does multi-millionaire Jerry Seinfeld need to do stand-up shows? Concerning the former, tickets to his shows will be available November 14 via Ticketek. In regards to the latter, Mr. Seinfeld has promptly replied to that himself. “I don’t care about work: I care about laughing,” the famed comedian told Fairfax’s Andrew Purcell.

While Jerry has had his share of mishaps with Australia, particularly Melbourne (he once called it “the anus of the world” during a live show) he seems much more enthusiastic this time around. “All comedians that I know love Australia because of the humour in the culture … the people are funny and like to have fun and their laughter is always very near the surface,” he told Andrew Denton in an interview for Enough Rope.

This is all very exciting indeed. But it’s important to recognise none of this would be possible without the success of Jerry’s eponymous ’90s sitcom (aka the greatest damn show of all time). In anticipation for Jerry’s upcoming tour, we thought it’d be best to relive the gold standard moments of his show. Most of you would be familiar with these moments. If not, then I strongly suggest you sit down and study these moments like sacred texts.

01. Elaine's Dance

There’s nothing quite like seeing someone jerk and convulse their entire body then call it “dancing”. But Elaine Benes pulls it off and even throws a little “thumb” and “kick” action in there. Watch with caution.

02. The Pez Dispenser

Only a show like Seinfeld can take something as arbitrary and insignificant as a Tweety Bird Pez dispenser and make it stupidly hilarious. This was the moment viewers realised, by-and-large, this show made absolutely no sense.

03. Hoochie Mama

A lovey-dovey Jerry compromises an ever-well-deduced plan by Kramer to stop the local neighbourhood kids from defacing his front door. A bulletproof idea, were it not for George’s neuroticism and low-key homophobia.

04. Not That There's Anything Wrong With That

The show’s greatest example of blatantly insincere tolerance. A journalist interviews Jerry while examining his interractions with George. Naturally, she assumes the two are more than just friends. Of course, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

05. The Low Talker

In the world of Seinfeld there’s always a catch to the people you date. Whether they have man hands, or eat their peas one at a time you can never get them right. Take Kramer’s flame who’s an infamous ‘low talker’, which leads to an unbearable amount of akwardness.

06. He Was in the Pool

Just to set the scene, the ever-pathetic George gets caught with his changing out of his swimming trunks by Jerry’s girlfriend. What would usually elicit a high-pitched scream leaves Jerry’s girlfriend giggling in disbelief. Naturally, George tries everything in his being to justify this.

07. Jimmy

Reason #2 why this show makes absolutely no sense; the creators decide to introduce a one-off character, who’s painfully bland aside from the fact that he always refers to himself in the third person. Vincent loves this scene.

08. Elaine's Out

No description needed. If you have an inkling on pop culture in the last 20 years this moment should be iconic for you.
