That’s kind of a misleading headline. Narcotics-carrying carrier pigeons have been well documented since about the mid-2000s in countries such as Russia and Colombia where they have been used to smuggle narcotics into (and cash out of) prisons. One pigeon in particular has made headlines recently when it was caught by guards at a Costa Rican prison with 14g of coke and 14g of marijuana strapped to it in a pouch (not unlike the ever popular fanny pack).

Dubbed, “narcopaloma” (drugs dove, or narcopigeon), the bird was relocated from the prison to a zoo, due to it having become accustomed to being hand fed. Perhaps this pigeon can stand as a shining example of rehabilitation, giving up a life of crime for the luxury of a handful of seed.
