When I first found out that beer was actually made from yeast, I thought that was weird enough but now we’ve got beer brewed from 35-million-year-old whale fossils. Delicious.

Bone Dusters Paleo Ale, as it’s fittingly been named, takes vintage brewing to a whole new level. Jason Osborne, co-founder of Paleo Quest, a non-profit company dedicated to advancing palaeontology and geology has enlisted the help of Jason Akerboom from the Lost Rhino Brewing Company to develop this craft beer.

Basically they went looking in old bones for a new strain of yeast and came across a variation already used in breweries all over the world. The new variant is called Saccharomyces cerevisiae var protocetus after the protocetid whale fossil from which they took the swabs. Add that one to your vocab bank.

Most importantly, how does it taste? Apparently it’s sweet and like Belgian beer and at 4-5% alc/vol, it is slightly weaker than regular beer.

It could end up being the best thing you’ve ever tasted. I’d probably give it a go.
