According to Japanese police and media, a family dog has saved a five year-olf boy from an attack by a wild bear roughly 550 kilometres north of Tokyo. The dog was a six year old Shiba Inu named “Mego,” which translates to “cute”. Apparently Mego ferociously battled a metre-high bear after it attacked a young boy during a riverside walk with his great-grandfather. (In other words, barked and the bear ran away.)

The boy’s 80 year-old great-grandfather called authorities when the attack happened. The dog’s owner spoke to Japanese newspaper Sports Hochi:

“Mego is usually calm and timid. It was a great surprise that she chased away a bear,” the dog’s owner told the Sports Hochi daily. Mego has always been his friend and we have rewarded her with meat and other treats.”

Mego’s breed of Shiba Inu is probably most famous for its intense internet saturation via the Doge meme.
