MTV Movie Awards 2016 recap

Star Wars Reigns Supreme, Ariana stuns

It’s that time of year again. Bring out the popcorn. Pour the tea. The MTV Movie Awards is back. Held in Burbank, Calfornia on April 9, the ceremony was co-hosted by Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. And here’s all you need to know.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens essentially owned the night, winning three awards out of 11 nominations, including Movie of the Year. Straight Outta Compton was awarded the True Story award, while Amy Winehouse’s acclaimed doco Amy won Best Documentary.

Chris Pratt and Charlize Theron took home the awards for Best Male and Female Performance, for their roles in Jurassic World and Mad Max: Fury Road, respectively. While Will Smith was awarded the Generation Award, Melissa McCarthy won the Comedic Genius Award, becoming the first female to do so.

Quote of the night comes from Ryan Reynolds during his Best Comedic Performance acceptance speech for his role in Deadpool. “Everything I do is to make her laugh,” he said, referring to his wife Blake Lively, “especially the sex.” We’re sure she appreciated that one, Ryan. Ariana Grande also performed a stellar, Madonna-esque, Hollywood rendition of recent single “Dangerous Woman”. Check out a snippet of the performance below.

And what would a red carpet affair be without the appearance of Kengi duo, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid? Jenner and Hadid stunned in a sheer Balmain dress and a pinstriped Versace suit. Of course, though, some oddities were expected. Actor Tyler Posey wore a onesie. Musician Mike Posner wore a giant paper maché head. Don’t worry, we don’t understand either.

I guess the @mtv movie awards are today and will air tomorrow. Thinking about crashing the partay.
