The documentary, The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz debuted at the 2014 Sundance Festival in January. This week, the trailer for the film was released to the public. To many people, the Internet both defined and was defined by Aaron Swartz. Aaron Swartz was a coder and digital-rights activist. Just over a year ago at the age of 26, Swartz committed suicide in his New York City apartment.

Shortly after his death, filmmaker Brian Knappenberger decided to make a documentary on Swartz’ life, launching a Kickstarter Campaign to fund it. Swartz was accused of illegally using Massachusetts Institute of Technology computers to hack into the academic database JSTOR. From there, he copied what is estimated to be 4.8 million articles as a protest against the commercialization of intellectual pursuit.

At the time of Swartz’ death, the young coder was awaiting trial for multiple accusations, potentially facing 35 years in prison.
