If something seems too good to be true, it most likely is. In Australia, we’ve been enjoying rock-bottom Uber prices lately due to some clever phrasing by the company. For instance, they refer to themselves as a ‘sharing economy’ service rather than a taxi service which has allowed drivers to shirk both GST obligations and the need for an Australian Business Number. In turn, this has meant we get cheap rides home from the city. Unfortunately, it looks like this all may change soon.

The fun police at the Australian Tax Office have decided that Uber drivers operating as a sharing economy service are now considered to be a taxi service, meaning your ride home will now cost 10% more. Uber will still be cheaper than taxis (thanks in part to a recent 15% price cut) and the chance to skol a water on your way home to mitigate a hangover is still a powerful incentive, but people are definitely going to be pissed about the price hike. That is, until they have another kitten delivering day and we fall back in love with them.
