In today’s gross news that’ll potentially ruin your friday, the Australian Border Force (ABF) have announced that they’re going to be conducting a visa operation in the Melbourne CBD that involves random stops of the public. The program, named ‘Operation Fortitude’, will kick of this evening and run through to Saturday. Working in collaboration with Victoria Police, Metro Trains, and Yarra trams, the Border Force officers will be checking individual’s visas to confirm their legal status.

Don Smith, the ABF Regional Commander for Victoria and Tasmania, has issued an official statement that claims that the operation is aimed at ensuring a “secure and cohesive society”. They’ve also outlined that the operation will be focussed on people travelling to and from the Melbourne CBD.

Is this making anyone else’s skin crawl, or is it just me?

UPDATE: The ABC are reporting that Operation Fortitude has been cancelled, as public backlash swells. Phew.
