Bitcoin is the kind of thing that makes me feel a little bit like a 90 year old trying to use Instagram, or just grasp the concept that the internet exists. So if you’re anything like me, you may have also asked Google “wtf is a bitcoin” in the last few months.

Bitcoin is a word that’s been thrown around a lot in the media lately, and as a reward for its popularity it has now made it to the top of the word food chain, receiving ‘word of the year’ as awarded by the Australian National Dictionary Centre (ANDC). For those of you falling behind, bitcoin is a type of digital currency that doesn’t need to be connected with a central bank. Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer payment network, a computer file that is traded between people. Although the concept is only 4 years old, bitcoin has absolutely taken off in the cyber world during that short period of time, and has now risen to the highest heights, fighting off tough competition like “twerk” and “microparty” to claim the title of ‘word of the year’, you go bitcoin, you go.
