There are few BFFs stranger than retired baller Dennis Rodman and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. I know what you’re thinking: “You must be on something, Rodman.”

Well, apparently he is. Rodman’s agent Darren Prince issued a written statement upon the athlete’s return to the US at the weekend, confirming he had checked in to a 30-day alcohol rehabilitation facility in New Jersey.

“Dennis Rodman came back from North Korea in pretty rough shape emotionally. The pressure that was put on him to be a combination of ‘super human’ political figure and ‘fixer’ got the better of him. He is embarrassed, saddened and remorseful lfor the anger and hurt his words have caused.”

Despite the obvious opposition to his continued visits to the controversial nation, the former Chicago Bulls player has always been an outspoken supporter of its equally controversial dictator, and his “best friend.” His most recent “basketball diplomacy” trip resulted in yet another backlash as he, among other things, implied that American Kenneth Bae deserved his imprisonment and sentence of 15 years hard labour in North Korea.

Pretty sure a real friendship isn’t supposed to spur you to drink yourself into oblivion. It’ll be interesting to see how this bromance pans out (or fizzles out?) when Rodman starts to see things a little more clearly.
