So Rap Genius definitely made it to the naughty list this year. At least in the eyes of search engine/monolith Google – though they’ve arguably been pissing rap fans and artists off for a minute, among others. Recently the lyrics site put a call out to its ‘affiliates’ on Facebook , promising exposure for links back to their website. This included posting a code with the full tracklist to Justin Bieber’s new album, with every link actually leading back to Rap Genius (surprise, Beliebers!).

Not quite sure how they were going to keep this from Google but they thought they could and now know what a Google grudge feels like. Search Rap Genius and you won’t actually get the lyrics page until you scroll to the sixth results page, at least the last time I checked.

Since the fall out, Rap Genius has posted an open letter to Google, basically stating their case, asking for forgiveness and admitting “We effed up.” It remains to be seen how long they’ll stay in the doghouse for, because if there’s anyone you don’t want to piss off, it’s Google.
