We totally don’t get it. About a month ago, for no apparent reason (and some suspect fowl-play), Flappy Bird, by Vietnamese indy game designer Dong Nguyen, became one of the hottest free games at the Apple App Store and Google play.

Then, for no discernable reason, Nguyen tweeted that he was planning to remove the app because he couldn’t take it anymore. No legal reasons, he simply didn’t like the reported $50,000 per day income, or the attention interfering with his simple life.

People really seem to love the unbelievably simple game, to the point where within hours of Flappy Bird being pulled from the stores; iPhones and android devices appeared on eBay with frankly outrageous price tags attached. On Sunday a 16GB space grey AT&T iPhone 5s with Flappy Bird installed was listed with a starting price of $650. Less than a day and 74 bids later, the phone was up for $99,900. Probably, the bids are fraudulent and just a scam to raise the market value of other Flappy Bird-equipped device auctions, which seem to be peaking in the low thousands.

In an interview with Forbes, Nguyen admitted that he pulled the game because he felt it was too addictive: “Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed…But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.”

Luckily for people have more money than sense; there are the eBay auctions. And for those of us with more sense than money; a huge variety of clones are already available…with names like Floppy Bird, Clumsy Bird, Flappy Bird World, Flappy Fish, Flappy Pig, Flappy Chicken, Angry Flappy Bird, Fartie Bird, and my favourite; Flappy Turd – Not a Bird, there are plenty of alternatives…
