Over the past week, 125-year-old gaming masters Nintendo have been copping a lot more than 64-bits of criticism for not including same-sex marriage in their new virtual reality game, Tomodachi Life. The internet – being the faith-restoring progressive force that it can sometimes be – quickly launched the protest campaign ‘Miiquality’ to send home the message that it should be okay for Mario to be with Luigi, not just Peach. Now Nintendo have finally issued a formal apology, albeit late, for what is ultimately a pretty shitty oversight to make considering how passionately-supported same-sex marriage is amongst the global community.

“We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life,” Nintendo said in a statement released on Friday. “Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game’s design, and such a significant development change can’t be accomplished with a post-ship patch.”

The publisher’s latest peace offering comes after their disappointing initial response to the backlash, which saw them claiming they “were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary” with the omission of virtual marriage equality.

However, the iconic Japanese company have changed their tune to a much more proactive one, saying, “We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.”

Good work, internet. Give yourself a pat on the back.
