What is the biggest waste of paper you can think of? Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ marriage certificate? Justin Bieber‘s autobiography? Wrong and wrong. It’s the hard-copy version of Wikipedia. “The Wikipedia Books Project” is seeking funding so it can print over one million pages worth of Wikipedia articles. That’s 1000 books worth. 80 metres of shelving worth. A whole shitload of trees worth. So that we can… see how big Wikipedia is.

They have a kickstarter-style funding plan, in which they need to raise $50,000 in a month for the project to go ahead. With 181 contributors so far, most of them have paid between $10 to $25 to have their names printed inside one of the books. Other perks include $250 for a copy of a book with a one-page dedication inside, and $1000 to put your company’s logo on the book.

If the project gets the go-ahead, it will be presented at the WikiMania Conference in London later this year, and then will be sent to exhibitions around the world, and finally be donated to “one of the big old libraries.”

With just 9 days until their deadline, and only $12,500 raised so far, it looks like a printed version of Wikipedia isn’t going to be a reality for us. How sad.
