In 1986, Dutch music journalist Bram Van Splunteren and a small film crew travelled from Holland to the boroughs of New York to document a developing music genre called hip-hop. The end result was Big Fun in the Big Town, a powerful documentary that brought hip-hop into the lives of many people in the Netherlands for the first time.
Featuring a newly minted DMC with his brand new Cadillac, an ambitious Russell Simmons and a young LL Cool J (still living in his grandmother’s house) along with Schooly D, Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante, Doug E Fresh and many other icons, the footage was shown on Dutch television and then shelved for the last 26 years. Watch the video below and read our interview with Bram from our upcoming issue here.
Along with adidas Originals, ACCLAIM magazine is pleased to present the Australian premiere screening of Big Fun in the Big Town. The night will feature the groundbreaking hip-hop documentary as well as additional short documentary made with Ice Cube in 1990. Director, Bram Van Splunteren will also be in attendance to provide some background on the film, as well take part in a Q&A session.
The screening acts as the launch of issue 27 of ACCLAIM magazine, the Saviour issue, which features an interview with Van Splunteren. The entry fee includes a copy of the issue and drinks from Sailor Jerry.
