Beats have made it big with audio equipment, their hugely successful headphones selling at up to $450 a pair. Now they’re set to offer the audio too with Beats Music, a new subscription streaming service going to launch this month. Beats founder Jimmy Iovine has again teamed up with Dr Dre, and is bringing in Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails as chief creative officer.

The move puts Beats up against other online streaming services Spotify, Pandora, and the new iTunes Radio. Beats will offer a $10 a month plan, with access to unlimited music – not all that different to what the others offer. But they claim that their playlists will be a whole lot smarter:

Beats Music services combines the power of human curation with technology to deliver the right online music at the right time.

This human element is where they may set themselves at the front of the online streaming race. Others create playlists based on algorithms that can send some whack suggestions. Apparently, you can “tell Beats Music where you are, what you’re feeling, and who you’re with, and we’ll deliver the perfect stream of music”.

It looks like Beats Music will send out some pretty heavy advertising for the service, already lining up promo deals with US phone company AT&T and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, and reportedly a Super Bowl ad, too.

The service is only set to be offered in the US so far. Competitors have taken note though;
Spotify has already ditched the cap on its free ad-supported streaming.

Beats Music is set to launch in the US on January 21. Head to the Beats Music website to find out more.
