It’s tough being Dev Hynes right now. You just lost your home, your belongings, a lot of unreleased music and your extra-cute puppy Cupid in an apartment fire. And now you’re being bashed for receiving charity money from fans on a Go Fund Me page your indie-pop girlfriend‘s mom set up out of the kindness of her heart. She set out to raise $5,000 but ended up bringing in more than $24,000 due to people’s love for Blood Orange and lost pets.

But after the Guardian posted an article bashing the success of this celebrity fundraising effort, Dev has posted an open letter to his Tumblr where he pledges to give the money away to charities.

“Imagine being outside of your home one day. Then somebody presses delete, on the last decade of your life. You own nothing except for what you have on you in that precise moment. This is what has happened … It’s more than music. As I’ve seen many people talk about, or people on the street. It’s my life. It’s everything I’ve ever owned….loved… It’s all gone, forever. I miss you Cupid.

Friends of mine have been more than kind to me, friends some people may not have, families in the same position would not be as fortunate… i’m aware of this. I want to give all the money to charity, 3 charities to be precise which I will explain further at a future point.”
