CL Moons is not here to play games. The moody side-hustle of Liverpool-based beatmaker SertOne, this project is an outlet for experimentation that fuses elements of footwork, juke, jungle and grime. Me, I heard the demos for his debut 1992 EP and genuinely fell to the floor uttering a Hail Mary. There are throwback jungle samples aplenty, with sneaky appearances from The Weeknd and Danny Brown – the latter appears in ‘Trippin’, which we are beyond pleased to premiere below. The full CL Moons 1992 EP will be available via tastemaking French label Cosmonostro next week.

EAVESDROPPING ON CL MOONS

Who are you?

CL Moons.

Where are you from?

Northern Ireland, now Liverpool.

What is unique about your local music scene?

Liverpool has a great scene. Everyone knows everyone. That’s Liverpool.

Describe your sound in three words. Go!

Deep, lush, frantic.

What makes you unique as an artist?

The way that I approach footwork. Loads of other producers in Europe have picked up on it as well, but most have taken it to the club, which is what happens to most forms of music when it lands in Liverpool. I liked the rawness of that Chicago sound, the Teklife sound. It doesn’t matter if the samples overlap or go out of time. As long as the beat is hard.

Have you heard any new music lately? Got any recommendations?

H-Sik, Slick Shoota, Esgar.

Tell us a little about this release.

When I first heard jungle, I knew I want do to my own version of it. I just had to wait until footwork came with the same tempos and patterns. I had tried before with some pure jungle stuff on MySpace and that back in 2009. Footwork is what enabled me to express that sound.

What inspired the artwork for this track?

The logo in the centre is done by my friend Mump, and the rest of the piece is by 96. He runs the label which is putting out the release, Cosmonostro. I had no say in this artwork but that is kinda why I love his work. He manages to create a visual of the music for me. When I look at the cover, it tells me what the record might sound like to an outsider.

What else are you working on at the moment?

I will be following this up with something new soon. Keep watch.
