Few things make me want to vibe out on the beach wearing an all-white outfit centred around a draped cardigan more than the video for Future and Kanye’s ‘I Won’. And this ‘I Won’ remix by Kid Masterpiece achieves that effect, and then some. You can catch me bumping this one in my draped cardigan outfit, poolside. Don’t trip.

EAVESDROPPING ON KID MASTERPIECE

Who are you?

Kid Masterpiece. Producer. Beatmaker. DJ and overall nice guy.

Where are you from?

Montreal, Canada. Raised in the borough of NDG.

What is unique about your local music scene?

There are many different musical genres and scenes that are developing and that have existed in the city. It’s very common for groups of Montrealers to join together and start their own shows and nights – that’s something very unique about Montréal. People will work and create with others to support each other, and this can be seen in other creative ventures such as in the arts and fashion.

Describe your sound in three words. Go!

Bright, moody, glossy.

What makes you unique as an artist?

I would say that my ability to be a listener of music helps me as an artist. I like to go through and listen to different types of artists. Anything from Ginuwine’s first album to a Mac Demarco song. While I’m listening, I also like to study and figure out what the producer is doing or how the sound feels to me. I feel like this has helped me progress because I will try to pick up little tidbits from listening or maybe get inspired and this leads me to figure something totally new by just experimenting.

Have you heard any new music lately? Got any recommendations?

When it comes to some straight up real R&B songs, I definitely would say I been playing a lot of artists such as Tink, Teeflii, Donchristian and even Dev Hynes. There are many artists in the SoundCloud world that I really enjoy. My friend Buddy-x, who writes and sings these amazing songs. There are so many dope up-and-coming artists such as Woadie, Blank Banshee, and VZNS (DJ SADGIRL) that I think are putting out heat.

Tell us a little about this release.

It’s a remix to Future’s ‘I Won’. I’ve been a big fan of his for a while now and I wanted to do something that would go with his unique and almost cold voice. The harps I play on my synthesizer for this track are inspired by Brandy and Monica’s ‘The Boy Is Mine’. I’m not directly sampling them but I was inspired by the progression in that song and I wanted to do my own version for this remix.

What inspired the artwork for this track?

The artwork was taken from this artist named Weird Science I found on Tumblr. The image has one piece layered over a background, which I feel goes with my remix, where I’m layering the vocals over a different surrounding.

What else are you working on at the moment?

I’m trying to put out constant music throughout the summer until the end of year. So I plan doing various remixes, edits and refixes that will tap into the R&B aesthetic that I am into. I also plan to go through different genres with these releases; I might have a more upbeat Jersey club–type edit or a very slow The-Dream–like remix. I also am planning to collaborate with some singers and try to come with completely originally written songs. I want to eventually go to this new direction of making new music and producing with other artists.

Do you have any shows coming up?

As of right now, I’m mainly concentrated on just making music and just trying to get out all my ideas. I have a few opportunities coming in for this year and if the right situation comes along I would definitely love to work something out.
