Promnite is the ghost of a school dances past, a hooded silhouette making clean beats with a touch of sleaze. I actually noticed Promnite on Twitter before SoundCloud, on those rare retweets from some of LA’s usual suspects. The whole mystery thing is a hype game, with the cut-through coming from good music – which Promnite delivers on. Not bound to any particular sound, Promnite hops between influences that range from Jersey, hip-hop and trap which has resulted in a 10-track digital album Love songs for what? and remixes of ScHoolboy Q and Denzel Curry. But who is this mysterious figure? Well Promnite’s latest DP has me pointing the finger at Colta – member number four of the Athletixx crew and part of Team Supreme. Anyone care to confirm?

Where there is smoke there is fire, and I’m already starting to combust from Promnite on this new collaboration with Chicago rapper Sidewalk Kal. Have a listen to ‘Running’ below:

EAVESDROPPING ON PROMNITE

Who are you?

Prom.

Where are you from?

Originally Staten Island, NY. Currently between Los Angeles, CA and Vladivostok, Russia.

What is unique about your local music scene?

We are all buds who work to break what is known as ‘genres’.

Describe your sound in three words. Go!

T-Pain, Nostalgia, turndown.

What makes you unique as an artist?

I don’t really think about current trends or what’s the hot sound, just try to do what’s honest to me at the moment.

Have you heard any new music lately? Got any recommendations?

Tennyson is a fav. There’s also this band The Penthouse Penthouses and The Acid you should check out! Also this indie band The Djemba Djembas is fun.

Tell us a little about this release.

Made a beat that reflects how I was feeling at the time – really thought it wouldn’t make sense to put it out as it needed a rapper element so I asked a friend at TAR records for a recommendation and they linked me with Sidewalk Kal. He literally cut the track, ad libs and all, in one day!

What inspired the artwork for this track?

The nature mother Gaia and the cold streets of Chicago.

Is there a video component?

Only video component ATM was released exclusively through Snapchat.

What else are you working on at the moment?

Working on some fun summer stuff with Alizzz, a new track dropping next week with DJ Rell and a big project with my friends Hoodboi, Falcons and Kittens!

Do you have any shows coming up?

Next month I’ll be in San Francisco, Austin and a few other cities in America. August I have an Asia run in the works!
