Celebrating Melbourne’s resilient artists, and live music’s unique ability to connect, heal, and unite, The Operatives are back at it again to present the world-debut of SQUARE UP. Taking place at iconic Melbourne live music venue The Forum on Friday, May 14th, SQUARE UP features a unique, custom-built stage that allows for overlapping and collaborating of multiple artists at any one time — it’s a brand new way for artists to collaborate on the fly and in a live setting. The stage will be additionally brought to life with an original visual and laser show. It’s the first showcase of its kind that is set to showcase 100% Victorian artists on one of Melbourne’s most iconic stages.

Showcasing the diversity in Melbourne’s world-class music scene, the SQUARE UP line-up boasts soul, hip-hop, RnB, Grime, dancehall, jazz, house, techno, drum n’ bass and more across its soundtrack, featuring sets from Victoria’s most exciting new artists, the first chance for many of them to perform off-screen since 2019 and a welcome return to an iconic dance floor.

The full lineup includes:
Akosia, Amin Payne, Billy Davis, Blush’ko, c000kie, Dallas Woods, Diem, Denzel M, Emma Volard, Fly Boy Jack, Fraksha, Hancoq, Ijale, Invictus Quartet, Jaal, Jaydean, Jordan Dennis, Khiarra, Kye, Sophiya, That Kid Maz, Vetta Borne, Yung Shogun + DJs Swerv, Kaira Cuvee, Nam and visuals by Isaiah Morris.

Head here to grab your tickets to SQUARE UP and keep scrolling for a Q&A with some of the artists performing on the night!

01. ThatKidMaz

Who is your favourite producer in Australia?
It’s hard to choose between Jujo, Subnet and Duan. They’re three Melbourne-based producers I regularly work with and we have the most fun making music together.

Who is one local you’re feeling right now?
Kaiit! She constantly surprises me with everything she creates.

Who are some international artists inspiring you lately?
YGTUT (American based). I really enjoy his overall aesthetic, the energy of his tracks and wordplay.

Best spot to eat in Melbourne?
Cafe Asmara in Springvale.

What’s exciting about the Melbourne music scene?
The strong sense of community and collaboration. It’s beautiful to see so many creative and talented people coming together to create incredible art.

02. Khiarra

Who is your favourite producer in Australia?
My favourite Australian producer would definitely be Vetta Borne. Her ears are just next level and she has this incredible range of sounds going from pop/funk to lush RnB. She also has the most beautiful Janet Jackson-esque voice and I’m genuinely so honoured to have had the chance to work with her.

Who is one local you’re feeling right now?
IULAI – He is definitely one who will blow your mind! A queer Polynesian baddie who makes anthems for the gorls, they have music releasing this July so definitely keep your eyes out. I’m also going to say – even though he hasn’t released a track yet, he genuinely gave the BEST live performance I have ever seen.

Who are some international artists inspiring you lately?
Ojerime. I don’t know what it is about her, but she’s been on my top played for months and never fails to bring goosebumps and get me in my feels. She is beyond incredible.

Best spot to eat in Melbourne?
Imma say this for all my vegetarians. Tahinas is definitely the spot. The flavour, the presentation, the emotions I experience. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

03. Jaal

Who is your favourite producer in Australia?
I have a couple of em but currently really connected to STNZA, Eric B, Son Ray & Gab Lubin just to name a few.

Who is one local artist you’re feeling lately?
My brother Marc Dylan. Hella nice with the beats & also dope with the songwriting.

Who are some international artists inspiring you?
There’s a whole lot of inspiration coming from all over the world, but currently I’ve been heavily digging artists such as Saba, Joey Badass, J Cole, Kent Jamz, & Brent Faiyaz just to name a few.

Best spot to eat in Melbourne?
Dragon Hot Pot. If you haven’t eaten here you have not yet lived and I feel sorry for you!

What’s exciting about the Melbourne music scene?
We have a lot of different nationalities involved within the scene, as well as an array of diverse artists, not only culture-wise but also stylistically. We also have a relatively tight-knit community of artists, which is continually building and growing and also seeing more people work together from all over the city.

04. Akosia

Who is your favourite producer in Australia?
Hands down Willie Tafa. His work ethic and talent is incomparable to anyone I’ve ever worked with.

Who is one local artist you’re feeling right now?
I love me some Olivia Escuyos, she’s got the vibe right and also Donny Benet, the way he writes music is so liberating and inspiring to me.

Who are some international artists inspiring you?
H.E.R really stimulates my creativity and I’m playing a lot of Masego, Afta-1, Yebba as well as my forever muses who constantly inspire me.

Best spot to eat in Melbourne?
Listen… it’s the random places down alleyways with no signs, that is where it’s at. My go atm to is a Khmer restaurant in Springvale, yes it’s in an alley but I can’t tell you the name as I don’t read Cambodian.

What’s exciting about the Melbourne music scene?
There’s so much love and it feels like we are supporting each other and showcasing our talent in a new way. It’s beautiful because we are forging a new culture that will lead to a unique and distinct Melbourne sound.

05. Nam

Who is your favourite producer in Australia?
My favourite producer in Australia right now has to be Jujo. His production is so clean and crisp and slaps real hard if you are into hip hop. These young guns like Jujo are the next generation of beatmakers that are going to do big things.

Who is one local artist you’re feeling right now?
So many great locals artists that are releasing quality music right now so I can’t pick just one – Jordan Dennis, KYE, Billy Davis, Sophiya, Yung Shogun, Swerv – I may be a bit biased but this group of talented individuals are gonna put Melbourne on the map internationally (no pressure). It makes me so happy to see Melbourne have so many talented cats rising through the industry.

Who are some international artists inspiring you lately?
As a DJ I’m a big Soundcloud geek. I trawl through all those waveforms and find some absolute diamonds. I mean that’s where Kaytranada started right? I love discovering new producers who haven’t quite hit the mainstream yet. At the moment I’m loving what Jun Tanaka (Japan) is releasing. His edits and flips and mash ups of genres are so much fun. Another Asian producer by the name of UKI is also releasing killer beats and remixes.

Where’s the best spot to eat in Melbourne?
My favourite has to be Hibiki Cafe in Camberwell. A unique Japanese dining experience that manages to do Asian fusion while maintaining its authenticity. Hibiki’s Udon Bolognese with a side of Lotus Root Chips is on point. Hibiki also support local artists and were supporting local students with cooked meals during lockdown last year!

What’s exciting about the Melbourne music scene right now?
Melbourne’s music scene is popping right now! It’s super exciting to be a part of it (still) and watch all these young bloods come through and show the oldies how it’s done. From fresh young DJs like Kaira Cuvee, DJ Smilez, C-PASH and singers such as Blush’ko (so smooth he makes me blush when he sings), c000kie, Khiarra , rappers – Denzel M, That Kid Maz, Ijale – producers – Swerv, Jujo, Amin Payne. What is not exciting about those artists?? Super stoked to share a stage with these people. Can’t wait to see it all come together on May 14th!
