After being yanked from the arms of L.A.-based hip-hop collective Odd Future by his mother and shipped off to a therapeutic reform school in Samoa, things looked dark for 19 year old dreamer Earl Sweatshirt. However, with an album that just dropped – and critical acclaim that focusses around his lyrical skill, rather that his role in shock-rap, it looks like things are looking up for Earl.

In a candid interview with GQ&A, Earl speaks openly about the lead up to his debut release Doris. The trials in his life so far have not been forgotten as he admits that he “can’t make that good of music when I’m happy. Some shit has to happen that either pisses me off or that’s very grave.”

He does seem to have calmed down on the rape and killing he focused on in Earl (2010) as he exclaims; “I’m an adult. I can’t be fucking talking about raping people and shit.” Isn’t personal growth great?
