Welcome to Acclaim Magazine’s Heat of the Week. Here are our picks for the best new local and international releases — Don’t forget to follow our Spotify playlist too, it’s updated every Friday.

01. B WISE & KOJEY RADICAL - THINK TWICE

South-West Sydney’s B Wise may be prompting you to ‘Think Twice’ throughout this new single, but you only need to hear it once to know it’s a banger. Producers Styalz Fuego & UNO Stereo create a dense blend of uplifting synths for B Wise to rap and sing his way through, with UK wordsmith Kojey Radical adding his own swagger to the mix. This is the first single from B Wise’s upcoming sophomore album, a project we need ASAP!

02. PANIA - ICYY

Melbourne singer Pania blew us away this week with a seriously smooth ballad called ‘Icyy’. With local producer Hamley’s delicate production complimenting Pania’s powerful voice and allowing her plenty of space to showcase some really clever hooks. It’s an understated anthem that doesn’t try too hard or drag too long. We’ve had Pania on repeat, she’s cold AF.

03. TRASH TALK - SOMETHING WICKED

Being confined by the walls of your home when new Trash Talk drops is not ideal, we’d prefer a wall of death. Still, ‘Something Wicked’ hits hard like Doc Martens in the middle of the pit. The roaring guitars, fierce screams, and crashing drums are enhanced by the gut-punch production of Kenny Beats, making this an unlikely but undeniable pair. Trash Talk’s new EP Squalor, which is entirely produced by Officer Kenny, drops next week.

04. CVIRO & GXNXVS - STAY WITH ME

Australian vocalist/producer duo and vowel-haters CVIRO and GXNXVS link up again on ‘Stay With Me’, which sees the pair channel their inner Usher and deliver the smoothest, most authentic mid-90s RnB going in 2020. Best listened to in a flowing, open silk shirt and four of your friends to choreograph a dance routine with!

05. FREDDIE GIBBS & THE ALCHEMIST - 1985

The frantic raps of Freddie Gibbs and the sampling sorcery of The Alchemist, what could go wrong? Absolutely nothing. ‘1985’ submerges 70s sounding guitars in a fiery pit of raps, with Freddie dropping gems like “Keep them beamin’ up to Scotty in my crack lobby.” The pair’s collaborative album Alfredo is out today, a full-course meal of guttural boom-bap with features from Tyler The Creator, Rick Ross, Benny The Butcher, and Conway The Machine. Some pasta would go down well right now, but we’ll settle for this dish instead.
