Thanks to the work of an overzealous broadcast censorship coordinator, Kanye’s visually overwhelming closing performance at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards entered bizarre territory when huge sections of the two-song set were televised without sound. The audio omissions were disappointing, but given how much difficulty Kanye had maintaining a family friendly rendition of ‘All Day’ last time he performed the song, it’s probably not totally surprising.

Considering Yeezy’s penchant for creating divisive art under the guise of popular music, we can’t entirely dismiss the possibility that this was actually part of some broader statement about the pop spectacle.
Even if it wasn’t intentional, he could totally own it under that pretence anyway. If Jay Z can lip sync the same song for six hours in a gallery, surely Ye can perform a set riddled with blinding light and fire, have it broadcast with only fleeting moments of audio, and call it a statement, right? Watch it above and decide for yourself.
