Should I feel guilty for listening to this? Is Kitty (née Kitty Pryde) a solid emcee or Taylor Swift in disguise? Is this recycled pop trash or quality dream trap production? Is dream trap a thing? Why do I now feel dirty?

So apparently I missed the whole Kitty Pryde thing and am now left in a state of utter confusion, facing a number of ethical dilemmas: chiefly, should I feel bad for liking this? If you too found yourself seriously considering self-flagellation for a moment, take resolve in the fact that Kitty actually looks a lot younger than she is and her first major video, ‘❄ OKAY CUPID ❄’, which is way too much like Alison Gold’s ‘Chinese Food‘ (major visual warning), was a DIY project and very self-aware.

After a period of reflection, I can’t help but have a lot of respect for the 22-year-old. She’s maintained an unpretentious and underivative style, and her southern influenced, indie-rap skills are on par with a lot of much bigger alt-emcees right now. And yet she carries herself with such humility and simplicity resulting in something really refreshing.

‘☆:*・°☆:* emob0unce °☆.*・°☆’, is the first single from her forthcoming EP that includes collaborative material from the likes of Djemba Djemba and Chrome Sparks. As suggested by its title, the track is pretty idiosyncratic – creating a blend of glittery production and impulsive southern rap that’s ultimately a lot of fun.

A video may well arise tomorrow of Kitty bearing a brand new chest, straddling some kind of military hardware, but here’s hoping she stays true to her vision.
