M.I.A vs PSG football club over ‘Borders’ video

Compensation for 'harm' to PSG or Refugees?

Posted by

In preparation for her upcoming album, Matahdatah, M.I.A. recently released the video clip for featuring record ‘Borders’. The song makes social and political statements about refugees and their treatment and is accompanied by creative but relatable imagery.

For a few seconds in the video clip, M.I.A wears a Paris Saint-Germain football jersey. Their major sponsor, Emirates, is featured on the front of the Jersey, however, slightly modified. Their well-known slogan, ‘Fly Emirates’, has been changed to ‘Fly Pirates’ to suit the theme of the video clip, which furthers her creative abilities. PSG on the other hand, don’t quite agree and believe it’s giving their club and sponsors a bad name by associating them with this sort of treatment of refugees.

M.I.A. took to Twitter, posting a copy of the letter she was sent from the football club demanding she take down the video and ‘compensate [them] for the harm [they] have suffered’. She clearly could not care less about the thoughts of PSG and is using the letter as a way to start conversation and bring more awareness to the topic she is obviously so passionate about. Have a look at her music video above as well as the letter and join the conversation on her twitter page here.
