Here’s some history for those of you not playing along at home: after rumours reached the Blurred Lines camp (and all involved) that the Marvin Gaye estate were uncomfortable with the similarities between ‘Blurred Lines’ and Marvin Gaye’s ‘Got to Give it Up’, Pharrell Williams, Thicke and Clifford Harris Jnr. pre-emptively sued Gaye’s estate to protect the song from copyright claims.

Fast-forward to Gaye’s family counter-suing, citing music critics’ support that the two songs sound similar, that Thicke himself cited ‘Got to Give it Up’ as an influence and adding on top claims Thicke’s other song ‘Love After War’ is another rip-off of Gaye’s ‘After the Dance’ and we’ve now got the musical equivalent to pistols at dawn.

With sights now set on EMI, Gaye’s family are accusing the music publisher of not remaining neutral and bullying them (EMI represent both singers), for planting a false story trying to discredit the Gaye estate and of not protecting Gaye’s work which breaks contract. They are fighting for full control to Gaye’s entire song catalogue.

Above is a video of the two songs wonderfully mashed together, press play and see if you’re #teamthicke or #teamgaye.
