Apparently it’s Missy Elliott’s birthday today, so my editor suggested that I pay tribute to her long career as a producer, singer and rapper (which makes her a ‘slasher,’ according to her ol’ gal pal Eve). Missy has come a long way since her days as a member of Sista, what with their debut single having a video that looked like it was shot for $4.35, to becoming an international star worthy of a Super Bowl spot. While we all know her big hits and dancefloor burners, she’s also put in some work by teaming up with some of the best and brightest rapper dudes of their day. Here are 10 examples worth checking out, plus an outstanding Rich Harrison track for good measure.

01. Missy Elliott - 'Violator Run This' [unreleased]

Intended for the second Violator compilation, which collected all the artists managed by the late, great Chris Lighty at the time, Missy threw herself into the Public Enemy chamber and got down with the ‘Funky Drummer,’ as it were.

02. Ol' Dirty Bastard feat. Missy Elliott - 'Lift Ya Skirt'

Taken from the never actually officially released posthumous ODB duets album, this Mark Ronson-produced cut flips the piano previously heard on Doo Wop and Biz Markie records to good effect.

03. Loon feat. Missy Elliott - 'Hey Woo'

Riding a convincing facsimile of a Neptunes beat (courtesy of Bink!), Harlem World weed carrier and severely underrated Bad Boy goon recruits Missy for an assist on this valiant attempt at a club banger.

04. P. Diddy feat. Black Rob, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg & G. Dep - 'That's Crazy' [remix]

Puff Daddy, a man known for his love of excess, continued his quest to throw everybody and the kitchen sink onto an all-star remix and hope that it sticks. Fortunately everyone does their thing here, to the point where I’m almost willing to forgive Diddy for sporting leather pants on the cover of his We Invented The Remix album. I said almost.

05. Redman feat. Missy Elliott - 'Dat Bitch'

The Funk Doctor Spock channels some disco vibes for this cut from 2001’s Malpractice album for one of their many collaborations.

06. Missy Elliott. feat. Grand Puba and Mary J. Blige - 'My Struggles'

Whoever suggested that Missy record an unofficial sequel to Mary J. Blige and Grand Puba’s classic ‘What’s The 411’ in 2005 deserves some kind of medal, or at least a bottle of fine wine from the Uptown Records cellar. Fun fact: Qur’an Goodman, the guy who produced this, is the son of Philly record legend Lawrence Goodman and was a member of Da Youngstas.

07. Missy Elliott feat. Eminem - 'Busa Rhyme'

Who wouldn’t want a guest spot from Slim Shady in his 1999 prime?

08. Missy Elliott feat. feat. Redman & Method Man - 'Dog In Heat'

A bouncy Timbaland track combined with rap’s answer to Cheech and Chong? What could possibly go wrong?

09. Missy Elliott feat. Jay-Z - 'Back In The Day'

A quality reminisce-style track from 2002’s Under Construction that’s particularly notable for hearing Jay namecheck Bronx legends Showbiz & AG.

010. Missy Elliott - 'Can't Stop'

No guests on this but pretty much everything that producer Rich Harrison (of ‘Crazy In Love’ and ‘1 Thing’ fame) touched during this period was pure gold. Here’s hoping he returns to the music game someday and brings back those loud drums.
