Premiere: Lover Goes Film Noir on ‘Waiting Up’

The singer enlists Sydney rap duo Cult Shotta for an emotional video shot in an old pill factory.

Australian artist Lover has been steadily evolving over the last two years and his latest single ‘Waiting Up’ is a testament to this. It’s a lo-fi, vocoder dream with a feature from Sydney rap duo Cult Shotta, who effortlessly flow over Litche and Tanssi’s chugging production.

The single’s moody monochromatic video was directed by Sydney-based photographer Jayemol and shot in an 1800’s pill factory in New South Wales. We asked Lover about the creative process behind the video. “This video was made with the intention of mixing the thriller and film noir genres. We decided to edit in black and white and use anamorphic lenses to give that closed in, anxious feeling. It was an unexpectedly difficult project for us as it was the first time Jayemol and I directed and shot a video with an emotional narrative. After many, many, many late nights drinking and editing we finally got it to a place which we are happy with.”
