Princess Nokia signs a record deal with Rough Trade

What does it mean for the fiercely-independent artist?

Princess Nokia’s trajectory has rapidly accelerated in recent years and grabbed everyone’s attention along the way. Labels have been scrambling to sign her for years, but it looks like one finally succeed. Rough Trade today announced that Nokia had signed on with them and even celebrated by sharing new track ‘G.O.A.T.’ with an accompanying video.

It’s an interesting move from Nokia who’s always been firm about her status as an independent. In a 2016 interview with i-D she’s quoted, “I’m not a woman looking to be taken advantage of… If you sign your clause over, that’s paperwork where you’re expected to make an album and you’re expected to make it sell. And I wouldn’t have been able to do that. That’s why I stayed independent and that’s why I’ll always stay independent. I’ve garnered my career and my opportunities and my accolades based on me, just solely me.”

You get the idea that it would have taken a very understanding offer to convince Nokia to sign a deal. For Rough Trade to have scored the artist they must have agreed to a lot independence for her. It speaks volumes about Nokia’s determination to make her own decisions and make the system work for her. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
