Rap Genius cofounder Mahbod Moghadam has resigned amidst the fallout from his decision to annotate the manifesto of Isla Vista shooter Elliot Rodger. Yesterday saw him taking to News Genius (like Rock Genius, an offshoot of Rap Genius) to leave his own comments on the 141-page document, including praise like “beautifully written” and “artful”.

Moghadam went on to apologise:

“I got carried away with making the annotations and making any comment about his sister was in horrible taste. Thankfully the Rap Genius community edits out my poor judgement, I am very sorry for writing it.”

But today’s news sees him resigning from the business, his actions denounced by Rap Genius CEO as “gleeful insensitivity and misogyny.”

Throughout its existence, Rap Genius has been no stranger to controversy, earning the ire of not just ACCLAIM columnist Robbie Ettelson (for being “super-douchey college brats”), but of web titans Google (for shady SEO practices). This time, however, the annotation service is involved in committing something a lot nastier.

Gawker has archived some of Moghadam’s annotations from the document, which you can read in the gallery above.

You can read Rodger’s manifesto in full at The New York Times.
