If there’s one thing that Sydney DJ LUEN knows well, it’s where the best parties are at… probably because she’s the one selecting the tracks at most of them but the well-travelled music fiend has also been to her fair share of good gigs. In fact, one of these gigs will be taking place this weekend, courtesy of Undr Ctrl’s second birthday fundraiser as part of another year of epic OXJAM parties in Sydney.

For those that are unfamiliar, OXJAM sees countless parties being held around the country for a whole weekend, in support of Oxfam. So if you want to make your Saturday night count, make sure you check out the full list of events via the festival website. For our Sydney mates, details of Undr Ctrl’s birthday bash (where you can catch LUEN in action IRL), are below.

01. Wedidit, Los Angeles

Wedidit is such a tight crew. The guys live together and produce together, travel together and all have a similar taste in #aesthetics. The obvs producers on the label are Shlohmo and RL Grime who have been friends with Nick Melons (the Wedidit founder) since high school. They’ve since picked up some solid producers like Purple, Ryan Hemsworth, Groundislava, and Tory Lanez. They did an Aus party tour last year that kicked off at the RBMA tent in Splendour. The vibe was so good, all the guys stood together on stage drinking, talking, smoking and enjoying each others’ sets in full view of the crowd. It makes such a difference when all the acts on a bill are invested in each other’s music and stay to support the full gig, from the opening act playing to 20 people, to the full room at the end. It creates a community that the crowd can feel too.

02. Wondercore, Melbourne

Wondercore Island is run by Si Jay Gould, one of my favourite humans in Australia. Through Wondercore, he manages some of the greatest talent we have in Australia right now, including Sampa The Great, Hiatus Kaiyote, Oscar Key Sung, Vulture Street Tape Gang, and Jaala. He also releases these 20-something songs-long mixtapes that always help me find my new favourite artists. There was a release of recorded live sets from the Monday night jazz parties he runs in Melbourne, and as I don’t get to attend the actual parties, listening to this recording was sick. He also threw a wicked New Year’s party last year, which included Hiatus Kaiyote’s Nai Palm, Jaala, Sampa The Great, and Jazz Party in the side room. So much warmth and soul in his work.

03. Leaving Records, Los Angeles

I found Leaving Records through Stones Throw. The vibe is similar, less rap though and more lo-fi and wonky beats, sampled vocals, romantic synth lines and some great ambient stuff. It’s run by Matthew David McQueen aka Matthewdavid and Jesselissa Moretti. My favourite artist who released on the label is Mndsgn who does this YouTube series called Breakfast with Ringgo through Boiler Room in LA, where basically all these crazy producers come in to a lounge room / studio space and play records and make beats on the fly, and Sofie from Boiler Room (hardest working/best taste #girlcrush) is just chillin’ on the couch eating cereal, and they are all seriously high. The episodes go for two hours or so. The label did a party residency in LA over three weeks about this time last year that I honestly wanted to book last minute flights to, which included acts from the roster such as Cake Dog and Koreatown Oddity. I can’t wait to head to the Stones Throw Anniversary in Aus in September, which includes Mndsgn, alongside Peanut Butter Wolf, and J-Rocc. Huuge.

04. Rhythm Section, London

Rhythm section is Bradley Zero, who has been running a club night in Peckham for years, centred on vinyl culture. His show on NTS includes a lot of soul, house, beats, and surprisingly heaps of Australian music. He comes to Australia a fair bit, so I guess this makes sense. Some of my favourite releases on the label include Al Dobson Jr, Silent Jay and Jace XL, and Henry Wu. He’s also a host and programmer at Boiler Room. Last time I saw him play live was at this wild warehouse party in Marrickville with him and Prequel playing back to back with no shirts on. The room was sweaty and heaving, with one little fan in the corner and a single clogged toilet. A memorable night.

05. Enchufada, Portugal

Enchufada is run by Branko – a wicked producer from Lisbon, putting out amazing heavy Baile Funk, twerk and global club tracks for a few years now. He’s previously a producer in the recently defunct Buraka Som Sistema. Through the label he puts out these wild high-energy compilations called Upper Cuts. Every DJ set I’ve done this year includes a track from one of these compilations. They run parties in Lisbon and have just started doing them in Porto as well (a three-hour drive north) and I’m really excited to have booked flights to attend one of these gigs in October. Wew. Here’s a terrible video of Sinden playing a heaving Enchufada party in Lison in 2008, they still rockin.
