I’m guessing that most of you not watching in 240p have probably noticed that this isn’t the real Beyoncé throwing down in the video. But before you attempt to pull out my weave, just hear me out. It is the real FKA Twigs, and she does dance with some heads of lettuce.
In this BBC comedy sketch from 2011 aptly titled ‘Beyonce Wants Groceries’ we get a rare peek at pre-fame FKA Twigs (0:45 onwards) who originally made a name for herself as a backup dancer. The video, which begins innocently enough with ‘Beyonce’ and her dancers stocking up at the supermarket, takes a turn for the worst when she runs into former Destiny’s Child member Michelle and her crew (which includes FKA Twigs). Although Twigs describes the frustration of being “the girl from the video” on her critically acclaimed debut LP1, she doesn’t seem too down on it here. I’m guessing it was her role in this Jessie J video that did it.
