WATCH: Schoolboy Q – ‘Groovy Tony’

The reign of TDE continues

Posted by

Since the bucket list of the year hit Top Dawg’s Instagram a few weeks back, we have been keeping eyes on this space for a while. Shortly after that, we were gifted with Kendrick Lamar’s now chart-topping and critically acclaimed project untitled. unmastered. So naturally, when Top tweeted the promise of new TDE sounds earlier today, our ears pricked up instantly.

In fact, we went from writing a news post about Top’s promising tweets, to one about ScHoolboy Q’s drop ’Groovy Tony,’ to then writing about the accompanying visuals, all within the space a few hours. TDE knows how to keep you on your toes, and this music video definitely isn’t one for the lighthearted. Then again, we’re not sure if you can be a fan of Q unless you’re prepared for anything—from graphic car crashes and raging fires to visuals of a suspended body, this one is a bit of a ride.

‘Groovy Tony’ was produced by Tae-Beast, and is set to feature on ya boy’s upcoming LP that is yet to be titled. Having already described himself as “a groovy type” in one of our personal favourite tracks, ‘Los Awesome’ from Oxymoron, this track is the follow up from the 2014 killer of an album that we have all been waiting for.

The harsh and gritty beat juxtaposes the airy female vocals and Q rapping over it all is enough to have us in a TDE-induced coma. The 29-year-old rapper wears his heart on his sleeve and bears all in some politically-charged lyrics that go just as hard as always. He also lights a blunt from fire on his sleeves, but that’s a whole other story. Check out the raw video below and keep yourself glued to Top Dawg’s Twitter as there is definitely more fire where this came from.
