Behind-the-Scenes of Sophiegrophy’s A1 Hip-Hop Hit ‘Bag’

In the latest 'Starting Point' mini-doco, we meet the rapper inside her home studio to talk family, flexing, and the self-doubt that almost stopped her from releasing the A1 Hip-Hop hit ‘Bag’.

Welcome to Starting Point, a Spotify series produced in collaboration with Complex and Acclaim. We’re following four Australian rappers from Spotify’s flagship A1 Hip-Hop playlist to the places they feel most creative. We’ll hear the stories behind their breakout tracks, and learn more about what drives them to create. Last week we joined Kwame in his Sydney home studio, and this week Melbourne’s Sophiegrophy is talking ‘Bag’.

Melbourne Sophiegrophy’s self-assured bars have landed her festival spots at FOMO and Rolling Loud Australia. The driving bass of her debut track ‘Fast Life’ caught our attention back in 2017, and her bold personal style stuck. But it was 2018’s ‘Bag’, three and a half minutes of pull-no-punches flexes, that showed us the best of what Sophiegrophy can do (so far). The song’s unfiltered braggadocio earned her over 390k streams and landed her on the influential A1 Hip-Hop playlist.

In the second instalment of Starting Point, we get a look into the making of ‘Bag’ courtesy of Sophie herself. She walks us through her “bedroom first, booth second” approach to making ‘Bag’. She talks over-thinking and running her tracks past her family. Sophiegrophy’s infectious positivity is what makes it such a pleasure to see her win.
