Footnotes is a weekly wrap-up of everything that’s happening in the world of sneakers. It’s your cheat sheet to the latest news like new drops, collabs, sales, store openings, and anything else related to what you put on your feet.

01. Nike Air Max 98

The Nike Air Max 98 is poised for a triumphant return in 2018 with the announcement of another retro colourway to accompany the already revealed original ‘Gundam’. This latest instalment to the line features a yellow, navy, and white scheme which harks back to the initial launch back in 1998 which saw it play second fiddle to some of the other headline Nike models of the decade. However, with the 90s revival continuing to power on the silhouette will likely be welcomed with open arms and finally garner the love it rightfully deserves. This latest colourway, alongside the ‘Gundam’, is set to release on the January 18 via select Nike retailers.

02. Adidas x Dragon Ball Z

After rumours circled regarding a possible collaboration with the classic anime series in December, the prayers of adoring fans have been heard with a sneak preview released to the public. The entire drop will comprise of seven unique special edition sneakers representing each of the dragon balls. The first to be revealed was the other worldly white and purple Frieza inspired Yung 1 which features the Adidas Falcon upper marinating a top a fresh new sole. The second addition to the collection is a Cell inspired Prophere which boasts a textured green patterned upper highlighted by purple accents. There have been reports that the upcoming releases will be based on Mr Satan, Mr Popo, Yajirobe, and Tenshinhan. From what we’ve seen so far its safe to assume the rest of the collection will make for a unique hallmark on the Adidas lineage. The collection in its entirety is scheduled for a release sometime this August so stay tuned for more details.

03. Converse x Tyler the Creator One Star

The beloved collaborative efforts between everyone’s favourite flower boy and Converse is set to continue with more colourways releasing in the Golf Le Fleur One Star. A new pastel green and pink colourway dresses the silhouette releasing alongside a small apparel collection including hoodies and t shirts. Standing as one of 2017’s more desirable partnerships the eccentric vision Tyler has for converse is sure to bring fourth more designs to challenge monochromatic sneaker culture with his trademark love of vibrant colours and playful iconography. Expect both shoes and the apparel collection to drop as of January 18.

04. Nike Air Max 270

Heralded as Nike’s first lifestyle shoe to utilise 100% air technology, previously reserved only for running models, the Air Max 270 blends the comfort of a sportswear model with the rigorous support of a performance sneaker. Featuring elements akin to the Air max 180 and Air max 93 the new model pays homage to its predecessors whilst simultaneously ringing in the new year with unseen tech.

In particular a newly engineered zoned mesh upper (said to be for both added flex and breathability) and a full volume air max unit yet to be featured on any Nike catalogue to date. The Air Max 270 also lays claim to a 32mm heel which is the tallest Nike has ever created making it the perfect addition to the sneaker rotation of our vertically challenged peers. As of February 1 the Nike Air max 270 will be available for Australians via Nike online and selected retailers.

05. Nike Cortez Kenny

The powerhouse partnership between Kendrick Lamar and Nike is set for an authentic take on the Cortez. The Compton born rapper noted having strong ties to the silhouette, as much of his youth was spent growing up alongside the iconic sneaker. Earlier in the week Kendrick debuted the aptly named Cortez Kenny 1 during the halftime show of the College Football Championship in Atlanta. Heavily inspired by his most recent album DAMN. the sneaker features a white leather upper, punctuated by red stitching with a removed swoosh and “DAMN.” text emblazoned on the upper. The Nike Cortez Kenny 1 is positioned to release on January 26 via Nike SNKRS.
