Introducing Emily Drummond, a 21-year-old designer from Melbourne and recent fashion design graduate. As part of her final year at RMIT, she had a 24-week project in creating a graduate collection based upon her own research, ideas and theories. Enter ‘Brutal is beautiful’: the A/W 2017 collection.

Inpired by the underground music scene of Berlin and youth skating culture, Drummond’s brand seeks to establish a sense of smart rebelliousess. “My brand strongly revolves around men’s street wear aesthetics,” she explains, “whilst underpinning the idea of subcultures within society and reflecting the idiosyncratic being. It’s a brand about the attitude of dress, rather than focusing on trends or a particular way of dress.”

‘Brutal is beautiful’ draws on inspiration from historical architectural movements; in particular, the ugly, unappealing, and concrete monstrosities that culminate into brutalism architecture. It’s this subconscious purity that inspires Drummond.

“It seems inconceivable to many to find beauty and understanding in such a thing, whether it is the concept of brutualism or the manifestations that befall it,” Drummond says. “Very few individuals are able to see past the façade of ‘brutal’ to experience the unique beauty in the abstract, rough shapes that are built upon structured buildings, the texture of material and overall honesty conveyed in the buildings. This is a collection about translating the brutal into the beautiful.”
