I’m always about incorporating more art into life and if there were thought-provoking artworks set up in my supermarket, I might be less averse to actually doing my grocery shopping. Well, contemporary artist Patrick Martinez has the right idea. His focus on ‘the phenomenology of his surroundings’ sees him highlight the beauty in everyday objects as a regular theme in his projects.

His latest onsite installations featured, for one day only, at El Tapatio Market in Bell Gardens, LA, where his neon and mixed media works camouflaged almost seamlessly with the store’s existing signage and food displays. My personal favourites include the “Thugs need hugs daily” neon sign and the Tupac cake – you can check out more of the insidious images in the gallery above.

Word is, these pieces will be exhibited in an upcoming show “Buy Now Cry Later”. Check out Patrick Martinez’ website for more info.
