Weekly updates

Earlier in the year, Perth producers Ta-Ku and Kit Pop fused together to create the nü-trap side project HWLS. They dropped their debut EP late last month and followed it up with a killer video for the closing track 004 w/Noah Breakfast. The visuals in the clip are a generative landscape of texture and pattern that is so effortlessly synced to the track that the effect of watching it is almost hypnotic. We caught up with the duo to see what else is on the horizon.

Who are you?
HWLS

Where are you from?
Perth, Western Australia.

What is unique about your local music scene?
Everyone here seems to gel no matter what type of music you make, I guess the most unique thing is there is minimal ego between the people cause everyone is happy to help out and support to build the scene.

Describe your sound in 3 words. Go!
Beats, Samples and Gatorade.

What makes you unique as an artist?
I think it’s because we are just trying to do our own thing without being thrown into a genre. We try to keep things familiar but different at the same time.

Have you heard any new music lately? Got any recommendations?
The new Arca album is pretty out there and good, Clark’s latest and the Les Sins record is awesome.

Tell us a little about this release
This track was made with Noah Breakfast from Philly. So a lot of online file sharing.

What inspired the artwork for this track?
The artwork for the track stems from our previous track artworks from the EP, We like to keep things simplistic and the palette pretty limited – so black and white was an easy fit.

Is there a video component? What’s the story behind the video?
The video was made by Toby & Pete who have done amazing work with Flume and Chet Faker before. Not too much of a story behind the video, just a good flex of animated visuals to bring the track further to life.

What else are you working on at the moment? (Collabs/Remixes/Releases etc)
We are already onto the follow up EP and making demos for that. More collabs and a few remixes we are excited to get out soon. So yeah no names I can drop at this point but we are busy on a bunch of new material, so hopefully it will be out on the inter webs soon.

Do you have any shows coming up?
FC x BBE “Xmas Weekender” in Melbourne on December 19 and Sydney on December 20. [Tickets here]
