Mikey Hundred is a Melbourne rapper who may be familiar to you for a number of reasons. Besides spitting his own bars, he’s Allday’s tour DJ, a style icon of sorts and reps an impressive social media following. He has gained prominence in his own musical stead with solid producer credits and lyrics that teeter on the line between self-effacing wit and valid overarching statements. We wanted to see what else he had to say, check it out after the jump.
Who are you?
I’m Mikey Hundred, or HUNJ.
Where are you from?
I was born in the Philippines but I live in Melbourne, North Side.
What is unique about your local music scene?
There always seems to be fresh talent popping out of nowhere. It’s cool because it means we all have to be on top of our game and staying unique in order to not disappear into the sea of artists.

What makes you unique as an artist?
I do almost everything myself from producing, writing, performing and recording to directing and editing my own videos, doing my own design, artwork and photography. I like it like this because it means everything you see and hear is all me. That and I just enjoy creating.

To be honest I’m not listening to that much new music at the moment, mostly older stuff and my own shit. I am waiting for the new Death Grips album though and the Blur one too!
Tell us a little about this release
I produced this track while sitting in the front seat of our tour van with my laptop, headphones, midi keyboard and my feet up on the dashboard. After a weekend of performing and partying I had enough inspiration to get to my studio and finish writing it in under an hour. I wrote the chorus then posted on Facebook asking “who sings?” I went through the replies and picked the person I would be most comfortable with. I had never heard Sarah [McNaughty] sing before so I asked a mutual friend what she’s like. He kept saying she’s dope but he doesn’t know shit about anything so I just had to get her in and take a chance. I’m pretty stoked with my decision haha.
What inspired the artwork for this release?
I shot the video for this before we dropped the song, the night before we released the track I realised my artwork sucked. I quickly opened the Adobe Premiere session and scanned the vid for a screenshot. I went with a shot of Sarah McNaughty because I think she’s cute and better looking than me.
What else are you working on at the moment?
I’ve been working on an EP since last year. I’ve got over 20 tracks that I’ll cull down but for now I’m just enjoying creating and dropping singles. I’m still working on the EP but I’ve been having so many ideas lately for songs and videos, so I’m just going with what I’m loving in the moment and riding where my feels take me.
Do you have any shows coming up?
I’m DJing for Allday a lot so in terms of my own stuff I’ve got nothing booked at the moment. I’m also re-shaping my live set so it’s going to be a lot different to how it was before. It’s always felt like DJing, producing and rapping never really clicked together in me but I’m finally finding a way to roll it all in to one.
