Up Late Texting Little Dragon

We spent an Australian evening texting one quarter of the Swedish four-piece.

While Erik Bodin, the drummer for Swedish band Little Dragon, settled into his morning, I started to make dinner. I was in Melbourne, he was in Sweden. There was a ten hour time difference. We were texting.

It’s been 23 years since Erik, bassist Fredrik Wallin and vocalist Yukimi Nagano formed Little Dragon as high schoolers (later joined by keyboardist Hakan Wirenstrand), and 12 years since they released their debut self-titled album. In the time since, the electronic foursome have demonstrated remarkable staying power. Their fourth studio album, Nabuma Rubberband, earned the band a Grammy nomination; they appeared on Mac Miller’s 2015 album GO:OD AM; Yukimi provided vocal for SBTRKT‘s explosive track ‘Wildfire’; they earned a credit on Kaytranada‘s 2016 album 99.9%, and another more recently on Tinashe’s Joyride. Their list of collaborators is expansive a (Big Boi, Jai Paul, Gorillaz) and their output is unrelenting. Their 2018 EP, Lover Chanting, arrived less than a year after their year after 2017’s Season High LP.

I touched on both of these released when messaging Erik, but largely got sidetracked and ended up chatting video game addiction, vinyl discoveries, and his favourite Erykah Badu album. Swipe through in the gallery above.
