Nicki Minaj is a woman of many characters but you probably haven’t seen much of the person in this video. Sitting down with Angie Martinez for Power 105.1, Nicki starts off talking about her new album The PinkPrint but conversation quickly turns to boys, as the rapper discusses those Drake and Meek rumours (short of actually confirming any new hook-up) and navigating life and fame following the now public breakdown of her 15-year relationship with Safaree Samuels.
“I don’t think people realise it’s not just a relationship or breakup. That was a humongous part of my life. It is something that I am dealing with publicly and it’s not easy. I’m also not gonna joke about it or try to disrespect him and try to act like he didn’t mean the world to me and still doesn’t mean the world to me. I’m just figuring it out.”
With a pretty strong relationship focus on her current album, it’s obvious that a lot of it was inspired by the ending of that partnership but not every song is a specific read on Samuels.
“I wasn’t broken up when I was writing a lot of these songs..a song is like an argument frozen in time. So sometimes in an argument you say things that aren’t necessarily even going to lead to a break-up or it’s not when you broke up…but all of it came from a place of love because every single thing that my relationship was based off was love and there’s still nothing but love there.”
So even Barbie has real feelings. And, like Angie, I’m pretty curious to see who’s sliding into Nicki’s texts now that she’s on the market. I have a feeling she’s going to be okay. Check the full interview above.
